Zap Reference Manual
This is a reference document that describes the Zap's leds, ports and button interaction.
Physical Layout
Your Zap has components on two sides:
Side A (Output Side/"OUT")

Reset Button – located to the left

Blue Status LED – located to the left of the reset button

Green Terminal Blocks – RS485 port that is for Modbus RTU (wired)

P1 Output Port (RJ12) – located on the far right, covered by a removable cap

Green Data LED – located inside the output port
Side B (Input Side/“IN”)

P1 Input Port (RJ12) – located to the left
-
Power USB-C Port – located in the center
-
Green Power LED – located inside the input port
Note: The Zap is shipped with a pre-attached RJ12 cable connected to the input port.

Ports and Connections
P1 Input Port (RJ12)

Location: Input side, left of Power USB-C port
-
Purpose: Connects to your energy meter's P1 port
-
Cable: Use included RJ12 cable
-
Power: Receives power from meter (no USB-C needed)
USB-C Port
-
Location: Input side, center
-
Purpose:
-
External power when P1 port doesn't provide it
-
Firmware updates (advanced users only)

When needed:
-
P1 port provides no power
-
Daisy-chaining devices
-
Meter far from WiFi router
-
P1 Output Port (RJ12)
-
Location: Output side, right
-
Purpose: Connect additional P1 devices (daisy-chain)
-
Default: Covered with removable cap
-
Important: When this port is in use, the Zap must receive external power via USB-C.
Green Terminal Blocks

Location: Output side, center
-
Purpose: Future sensor connections
-
Status: Reserved for upcoming features

Current use: Not active
LED Indicators
Power LED (Green)
-
Location: Input side, inside the input port
-
Solid green: Device has power
-
Off: No power - check connections
Data LED (Green)
-
Location: Output side, inside the output port
-
Blinks: Each time data is received from meter
-
Normal interval: Every 10 seconds
-
No blinking:
-
P1 port may be disabled
-
Contact grid operator to activate
-
Status LED (Blue)
-
Location: Output side, right (next to button)

Behaviors:
Pattern
Meaning
Solid on
Bluetooth Setup mode - no WiFi configured
Single blink at startup
Zap is starting
Double blink
**(some time after start up blink)**
Connected to WiFi (usually within 30 seconds, may vary depending on WiFi coverage).
Slow blinking
Button held 2-5 seconds (restart pending)
Fast blinking
Button held 5+ seconds (reset pending)
Single blink
Button pressed briefly
Reset Button Functions
The button provides different functions based on how long you hold it:
Quick Press (< 2 seconds)

Action: Status LED blinks once

Result: No action (acknowledgment only)
Hold 2-5 Seconds

Visual: Status LED blinks slowly
-
Release action: Restarts device
-
Use when: Device seems frozen
Hold 5+ Seconds
-
Visual: Status LED blinks rapidly
-
Release action: Reset
-
Result:

Clears WiFi credentials
-
Device starts in Bluetooth setup mode

Changing WiFi networks
-
Device won't connect
-
Selling/moving device

Normal Operation
When everything is working correctly:

Green Power LED: Solid on
-
Green Data LED: Blinks every ~10 seconds
-
Blue Status LED: Double blink pattern
-
App shows: Recent energy data
First-Time Setup
-
Connect The Zap to the meter's P1 port (input side) using included RJ12 cable
-
Power LED turns green
-
Status LED stays solid blue (setup mode)
-
Open The Sourceful Energy app
-
Enable Bluetooth on your phone
-
Follow app instructions
-
Select 2.4GHz WiFi network
-
Success: Status LED shows double blink
Troubleshooting Quick Reference
Problem
Check
No LEDs
Power connection, try USB-C
Status LED solid
Device in bluetooth setup mode, WiFi configuration needed.
Status LED single blink but never any double blink after that.
WiFi connection failed. Improve wifi coverage, or reset and reconfigure wifi.
No Data LED blinks
P1 port activation needed
Device hot
Wrong port type - Disconnect!

Range: Stay close during setup (Bluetooth)
