Updated this week

What is a P1 or HAN (RJ12) port?

A P1 or HAN port (RJ12) is a physical connection on your smart electricity meter.

It allows you to connect a meter reader like Zap to access real-time energy consumption data.

It enables access to measurement data, such as:

  • Current electricity consumption (in watts or amperes).

  • Voltage and current per phase.

  • Power per phase.

A Zap connected to a energy meter through the P1 port.

To learn more about what meters are compatible and how to find the RJ12 port on your meter check out the Zap meter compatibility guide.

How do I activate the P1/HAN/RJ12 port?

The port is activated by your grid operator.

You can usually enable it via their website. If that option isn't available, please contact their customer support so they can activate it for you remotely.
