Get started with the Sourceful Energy app

The very first steps are to register the Zap in the Sourceful Energy app and setup a Wi-Fi connection

Updated yesterday

Step 1: Connect your Zap to a Power Source

Option 1: Electricity meter (Required if configuring a Meter)

  • Locate the data port on your energy meter

    • It's usually behind a small cover

    • Labeled "P1", "Customer", "User" or "RJ12"

    • RJ12 size (like old telephone jack)

    • Plug the Zap to the Electricity meter's P1-port (RJ12) using P1 cable

Option 2: USBC-cable

  • Connect Zap to a power source using an USBC-cable

What success looks like:
Blue led constantly on

  • If it's not – Hold down the power button for ~5s until it starts blinking rapidly, let go and it should go back to solid blue light.

IF THE ZAP HAS BEEN PREVIOUSLY CONFIGURED AND IS CURRENTLY CONNECTED TO WIFI, THE BLUE LED SHOULD BE OFF

What do all the LED's/Ports on the Zap unit mean?

  • Reset button: Can be held for 2s to reboot or 5s to reboot AND reset Wi-fi.

  • RJ12 (p1) output: Can connect additional devices

  • Blue Status LED: Shows status of Zap – Changes when using reset button or configuring the Zap

  • Power USB-C: Used when connecting Zap to a power source that isn't an Energy meter

  • Green Power LED (OUT): Blinking every time there is Data sent from your Zap

  • Green Power LED (IN): Always on when Zap is connecter to a power source (Energy meter/Computer/Power socket)

  • Green Terminal Blocks: RS485 port that is for Modbus RTU (wired)

Zap reference manual

Step 2: Check the Zap's LED Lights

After connecting, you should see:

  • Green Power LED (IN): Constant green light

  • Green Power LED (OUT): Off

  • Blue Status LED

    • If ON – Continue

    • If Off – Hold down reset button 5 seconds until you see rapid blinking, let go and then proceed. (After 2 seconds it will start blinking slowly but keep holding until it blinks faster.)

Step 3: Start Sending Data to the Sourceful Network

  1. Enable Bluetooth on your phone

  2. Tap Connect a Zap in the app

  3. Stay close to Zap during setup (within 1 meter)

  4. Follow app instructions to:

    • Find your Zap

    • Claim the zap to your account and set its location.

    • Connect to WiFi (2.4GHz only)

    • Complete onboarding

After successful setup:

  • Bluetooth automatically disconnects (Blue LED switches off)

  • Zap switches to WiFi mode

  • Data LED shows blinking pattern

Step 4: Verify Data is being sent

Check that your meter is sending data:

  1. Watch the Data LED (Green (OUT))

  2. Should blink every 10 seconds (typical interval)

  3. If no blinking after 1 minute:

    • P1 port may not be activated (if connected to Electricity meter)

    • Check cable connection

    • Contact your utility provider

What Success Looks Like

When fully connected and working:

  • ✅ Green Power LED: Solid on

  • ✅ Green Data LED: Blinks every ~10 seconds

  • ✅ Blue Status LED: Off

Troubleshooting Tips

No Power LED?

  • Check P1 cable connection

  • Try USB-C power as alternative

  • Verify correct port (P1 not HAN)

Status LED solid blue?

  • Device in setup mode

  • Ready for app connection

Data LED not blinking?

  • P1 port likely not activated

  • Contact utility provider

Can't find device in app?

  • Ensure Bluetooth is on

  • Move closer to Zap

  • Try a factory reset (hold button on the Zap for 10 seconds)

You're now ready to proceed with the onboarding and select a device to configure. Feel free to return to the specific configuration guide that brought you here and continue the process. I hope you'll enjoy utilizing your Zap and being a part of the Sourceful Energy network.
