Troubleshooting: Blue Status LED Blinking Then Turning Off

Blue Status LED blinks once at startup but never again? Zap has WiFi saved but can't connect. Reset method, WiFi setup & reconnection guide

Updated this week

The Problem

Your Zap shows:

  • ✅ Green Power LED is on

  • ❌ Blue Status LED blinks briefly then turns off

  • ❌ Cannot find device in Sourceful app

This indicates your Zap has WiFi credentials saved but cannot connect to the network.

Understanding the Status LED

The Status LED is the blue LED next to the reset button. Its behaviors tell you the WiFi state:

Meaning

Solid blue

No WiFi configured

Ready for setup

Single blink then off

WiFi saved but can't connect

Your issue

Single blink at startup then a double blink after some time.

The double blink indicates that the Zap has connected to the configured WiFi network.

Working normally

Why This Happens

Your Zap remembers WiFi settings but can't connect because:

  1. Network changes

    • Router replaced or reset

    • WiFi password changed

    • Network name (SSID) changed

    • Router upgraded from 2.4GHz to 5GHz only

  2. Configuration issues

    • Zap trying to connect to 5GHz (only supports 2.4GHz)

    • Router has disabled 2.4GHz band

    • MAC filtering blocking new devices

    • DHCP pool full (no IP addresses available)

  3. Signal problems

    • Meter location has poor WiFi coverage

    • Metal meter cabinet blocking signal

    • Router too far away

Solution: Factory Reset and Reconnect

  1. Keep Zap connected to meter

  2. Press and hold button firmly (should feel click)

  3. Watch Status LED for changes:

    • 2-5 seconds: LED blinks slowly

    • 5+ seconds: LED blinks rapidly

  4. Release when rapidly blinking

  5. Status LED should stay solid = reset successful

Ensuring 2.4GHz Network

Most routers support both bands. To check:

Router Admin Panel:

  1. Access router (usually 192.168.1.1)

  2. Find Wireless/WiFi settings

  3. Enable 2.4GHz band if disabled

  4. Consider separate SSIDs:

    • "HomeWiFi_2.4G" for 2.4GHz

    • "HomeWiFi_5G" for 5GHz

Common Router Locations:

  • TP-Link: Advanced → Wireless → Wireless Settings

  • Netgear: Wireless → Wireless Settings

  • Asus: Wireless → General

  • Linksys: Wireless → Basic Settings

If Reset Button Not Working

Physical checks:

  • Use pen tip for firmer press

  • Should feel/hear small click

  • Try USB-C power instead of meter power

  • Check for debris blocking button

Alternative approach:

  • Power Zap via USB-C only

  • Attempt reset again

  • If still unresponsive, contact support

Still Having Issues?

Document for support:

  1. Which reset method tried

  2. LED behaviors observed

  3. Router make/model

  4. Network configuration (2.4/5GHz)

  5. Video of LED behavior if possible

Common solutions:

  • Move router closer or add WiFi extender

  • Create dedicated 2.4GHz network for IoT devices

  • Disable MAC filtering temporarily

  • Increase DHCP pool size

Prevention Tips

To avoid future connection issues:

  • Keep 2.4GHz network active even if you prefer 5GHz

  • Document Zap's network for future reference

  • Test after router changes to ensure connection

  • Update app for latest compatibility

Remember: The single blink means Zap knows your WiFi but can't reach it. A proper reset returns it to setup mode (solid LED) so you can reconfigure with current network details.
