Accessing USB Ports on Your Blixt Gateway

TLDR: Blixt USB ports have plastic covers. Use a thin tool to gently pry them out from the corner. Works for RS-485/Ethernet dongles.

Accessing USB Ports on Your Blixt Gateway

The Blixt gateway comes with two USB ports that are covered by plastic plugs from the factory. You'll need to remove these plugs before connecting any USB devices like RS-485 dongles or Ethernet adapters.

What You'll Need

  • A thin, pointed tool (small flat-head screwdriver or knife)

  • A steady hand

Steps to Open the USB Ports

  1. Locate the USB ports on the side of your Blixt gateway. You'll see two rectangular plastic covers where the ports should be.

  2. Take your tool and gently insert the tip into the edge of the plastic plug. The best approach is to work from one corner.

  3. Apply light pressure to pry the plug outward. These plugs are designed to come out easily - you shouldn't need much force. If you're meeting significant resistance, try working from a different edge.

  4. Once you get one edge lifted, the rest of the plug should pop out smoothly. Keep the removed plugs somewhere safe in case you need them later.

  5. Repeat for the second port if needed.

Technical Notes

Your Blixt gateway has one USB 3.0 port and one USB 2.0 port (standard for Raspberry Pi 4 hardware). For RS-485 dongles or USB Ethernet adapters, either port will work fine - there's no need to worry about which is which for these applications.

Safety Reminder

While these plugs come out easily, please be careful with any sharp tools. Work slowly and keep your fingers clear of the tool's path.
